Rotarians give dictionaries to third graders

Posted: Thursday, Jan 3rd, 2013

LA JARA — Conejos County Rotarians personally presented Scholastic Children Dictionaries to all third grade students in Conejos and Costilla school districts.

“These dictionaries are a powerful tool which develop and improve the students writing and reading skills. This year we included Costilla County and these students and teachers were excited to receive the dictionaries as well,” said Club President Julie Gomez.

Community involvement goes a long way. Community members from each county who care enough about these students donated money to help purchase the dictionaries and a brief explanation of the project was sent in a letter to the student’s parents. A sticker is placed in the front cover for the child to write his/her name and it advises that it is a gift to them from the Conejos County Rotary Club. It also lists the donors from each county.

A great big thank goes to Conejos County Rotarians and 2013 Costilla County Commissioners Lawrence Pacheco and Joe Gallegos. Special thanks to; Lil Flicker Tiendita, Home Town-Antonito, Ivan Gylling Farms, Guadalupe Parish Credit Union, Jack’s Market, Chief’s Storage, Arby’s, Fort Market, Old West Café, Lu’s Main Street Café, All-Gon Restaurant and Pizzeria, Sonia’s Convenience Store and Cienega Builders, LLC.
