SAN LUIS — The 2012 Colorado Congreso de Acequias will be held Oct. 19-21 in San Luis.
A welcoming reception will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, with Devon Peña of the Acequia Institute and Costilla County Commissioner Crestina Martinez welcoming the group. Also, appetizers and mariachi music will be shared at Emma’s Hacienda on Main Street, San Luis.
Saturday’s events will be held in the Centennial school gym and will begin at 8:15 a.m. Colorado Representative Edward Vigil will welcome the group and provide a legislative update. Sessions that day include “Recognizing Regional Challenges: The Colorado Acequia Story;” “The Colorado Acequia Recognition Law;” “Women and Youth in Acequias;” “Legal Water Risks;” and “Lessons from our Southern Neighbors.” A resource roundtable with the opportunity to question government agencies will conclude the day.
On Sunday, Oct. 21, events will include an acequia tour at 8 a.m.; “The Future of Colorado Acequias: Where do we go from here?” at 10 a.m.; break out sessions; and awards presentations for youth essay winners and legislators Vigil and Gail Schwartz.
