Native Writes: Stampede

Back when I was a kid, an old family friend declared that the San Luis Valley had three seasons: winter, spring and Stampede.

He wasnít really wrong. Thereís something about the oldest pro rodeo in Colorado that ignites layers of memories for generations of Valley people.

One philosopher once set forth the idea that the spirits of frogs inhabit Valley babies along with their first breaths. They may leave, but they will return.

As they grow older, they experience another great draw, Stampede.

Growing up, I saw it and felt it. My dadís sister had married into the Headlee clan and I learned that family believed in Stampede.
