“Why in the world would anyone do something like that?” I find myself asking this more frequently lately. A young man walks into a movie theater and begins shooting into the audience; a soldier returning from combat opens fire on his colleagues before turning the gun on himself; a mother tries to asphyxiate four of her children in order to save them from the pain of her pending divorce.
I tell myself that things like this have always happened, that events like these are rare and isolated, that technology has simply made it easier to disseminate information, but I still find myself wondering what would lead people to make choices like these.
