Still Waters: It wasn’t fair

Posted: Friday, Mar 29th, 2013

It wasn’t fair that because one person messed up, the rest of the planet had to suffer. Everyone following that first pair would have to die, through no fault of their own although all would be born prone to failing. More certain than birth would be death, not just for humans, but for all living creatures.

It wasn’t fair.

Every road kill carcass by the side of the road, every rodent meal for its predator, every sirloin on a dinner plate, even every well-loved pet who would come to the end of its life would have to pay the price of that first, fatal mistake.

It wasn’t fair.

Every child who would not reach adulthood, every newlywed who would barely get to be a bride before she became a widow, every family who would welcome home a flag-draped casket instead of a son or a daughter would have to pay.

It wasn’t fair.

Every brilliant mind overtaken by Alzheimer’s, every healthy body debilitated by illness, every youth conquered by age would have to pay.

It wasn’t fair.

Every river polluted, soil scorched and sky smogged would have to pay.

It wasn’t fair.

It wasn’t fair that one so innocent, one who never did a wrong thing, never harbored a hateful thought, never hurt a sensitive soul, would have to die a tortuous, painful death. Through no fault of his own, he would have to take the punishment he had not earned and did not deserve. Everyone else would now be able to look forward to life, but only if he died first.

It wasn’t fair.

It wasn’t fair that so much hate, so much suffering, so much darkness would have to be his, that one person would have to go through so much. It wasn’t fair that because of the mistakes everyone else had made, the one who never made any would have to pay, and such a price, forever scarred.

It wasn’t fair.

It was love.
