Letter: The great Republican dream

Posted: Friday, Feb 8th, 2013

Another step has been taken to realize the Republican Party dream of replacing the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) with private enterprise. On Wednesday, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe announced that beginning in August first class mail will no longer be delivered on Saturdays, an act described as a “cost saving” measure”. While the USPS takes no taxpayer money to operate, it has been losing money each year since a Republican Congress in 2006 passed a law requiring the Postal Service to pre-pay into a fund all the health care benefits required for employees during the next 75 years, in just 10 years!! Thus, this is for people not even born yet who may work at the USPS. No other public or private institution in the U.S. is required to do this and it amounts to over $5 billion per year. Without this burden the USPS would still be operating at a profit.

The USPS was authorized by our founding fathers in Article l Section 8 of the Constitution and the first Postmaster General was Benjamin Franklin. Clearly, declining services which are now being cynically proposed by Republican congressional enemies of the USPS are designed to also reduce revenue and send the Postal Service on a downward spiral to bankruptcy and termination. Is there anyone who thinks that private enterprise will send your Valentine Day card from the rural San Luis Valley to Florida, Maine, California, or Washington for 46 cents? The life-threatening benefit penalty imposed on the USPS needs to be lifted so it can get back to the business of serving the American people. Congressman Scott Tipton needs to hear from all those who support the wonderful, dedicated employees who serve in the U.S. Postal Service.
