Letter to the Editor: Think critically

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 29th, 2013

I watched President Obama address the nation to present Vice President Biden’s Task Force Proposals. I was in hope of a truthful presentation. However, this was not the case.

First, the weapons used at Sandy Hook were lawfully purchased by the boy’s mother under the current background check system. No violation or compromise of the current system had occurred. Therefore, no expansion of the current system is needed. This attempt to expand the current system is an underhanded effort to make gains on their political agenda that they could not achieve otherwise. To do this on the backs of the deceased is a political stinker besides being morally wrong.

Second, the primary people responsible are both deceased. The son killed himself after killing his mother and all those at Sandy Hook School. It was the mother’s stupidity that allowed her mentally unstable son access to her lawfully purchased firearms. Other community members and authorities at Sandy Hook were aware of the son’s mental condition. The mother told her son’s sitter “not to turn your back on him.” These people chose not to act to prevent his access to firearms.

Third, any weapon used to attack another person or group of people is an assault weapon. The mode of action (semi-automatic) and large capacity magazines (clips) are not as critical as mental stability, personal and task responsibility. Cropping officers are professional hunters employed by various governmental agencies in Africa to control elephant populations. The one I remember reading about used two British double rifles and a gun bearer to reload more quickly. Once the herd was located, a stalking procedure was employed to achieve the most efficient position. This move placed the cropping officer and his gun bearer in very close range to the elephant herd. Between 12 and 16 elephants were killed in less than one minute. Dedication to the task was very well demonstrated.

Too much politically motivated, knee jerk response has occurred and lawmakers are being pushed to act on it. Instead, critical thinking, analysis and response are what is needed now.

Do not sponsor or support legislation that answers to the call “do something.” I am a registered Democrat and an NRA Life Member.

Sincerely,

Hugh L. Fuchs
