Still Waters: Thanks

Posted: Friday, Nov 16th, 2012

To those willing to speak out …

* Like reader Macy Carroll whose three-line letter to the editor was succinct and sobering: “The Valley was greeted on the November 9 issue with bold headlines reading DON’T USE TAX MONEY TO KILL DEER. None of your Courier readers has ever read DON’T USE TAX MONEY TO KILL BABIES. What has happened to us as a people?”

* And another reader, Nancy Bousquet, who called to task those jerks who abuse and then dump out their dogs on county roads where they might get hit or have to fend for themselves, which we know is a story without a happy ending. Thank you Nancy for taking that poor, scared dog in and caring for him when his previous owner did not. There’s a special place in heaven for you and a nice hot one in hell for the jack-- who dumped him.

* And those on the national level who bring to light injustices and atrocities such as the recent murder of our ambassador to Libya, his aide and the two Navy Seals who tried to save them. It now appears this tragedy could have been prevented or at least halted. Shine the light of truth on this and other dark secrets in our nation’s capital.

To those willing to serve …

* Like those volunteer firefighters who responded in the dark and cold of a weekday night to my neighbor’s chimney fire. God bless you.

* And the dedicated folks like Aileen Peek who give of their own time and funds every day to care for the most helpless among us, the four-legged creatures in this area who have no home and no one to love them, yet. Aileen, almost a one-woman show for the SLV Animal Welfare Society, receives no pay and works incredibly long days to field phone calls, deal with cranky pet owners, pick up animals, care for them and take them to Colorado Springs every Saturday to try to find them homes in an area less glutted with unwanted doggies. God bless her and those like her.

* And the veterinarians like Dr. Enderle who helped my 10-year-old diabetic Freckles feel better this week and reassured me this was not yet the end of the road for us.

* Like the men and women in uniform who serve 24/7 on our highways and city streets, including those who responded to the county road in Costilla County Saturday afternoon when my friends Glen and Thelma Hufman were in an accident on their way home from church, and thank you to those who are now lovingly caring for Glen as his family prepares for his funeral. You are faithful, as he was faithful.

* Like our many pastors like our Pastor Jim who minister at all hours and in all types of crises and who do so not for praise or money but for the love of their Master who called them to a unique and often thankless career.

To those willing to love …

* In every circumstance, in every place, in every age … whether love is accepted or returned … in the face of hatred or reciprocated love …

… like God.
