Alamosa resident Mark Gregory Cantu, 62, died August 27, 2013 at his home in Alamosa.
Mark was born in Alamosa to Lafayette Junior Cantu and Gloria (Lopes) Chavez on October 21, 1950. Early in his career he worked for Coors in Denver. After moving back to the valley he worked for many years as a Manager for Loaf-n-Jug in Alamosa and most recently as a Caseworker for Community Corrections.
Mark enjoyed fishing and camping in the mountains. He also liked to watch movies and enjoyed marksmanship.
He is survived by his mother Gloria Chavez of Capulin; his son Dion (Kathy) Cantu of Grand Junction; his step-sons Sean Derbin and Dale Derbin, both of Denver; his brothers and sister James (Diana) Cantu of Romeo, CO, Chris (Debra) Chavez of Longmont and Bernadette (Jim) Garcia of Pagosa Springs, CO; his grandchildren Dion and Markos Cantu; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a host of extended family and friends.
Mark is preceded in death by his father Lafayette, his step-father Albert Chavez and his brother Lewis Chavez.
A Recitation of the Rosary will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 29, 2013 at the St. Joseph Catholic Parish in Capulin. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 30, 2013 also at the St. Joseph Catholic Parish in Capulin. Committal of ashes will follow services in the Capulin Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Dion Cantu in care of Rogers Family Mortuary and will be used to set up a Scholarship for Mark’s grandchildren.
