Jose George Gallegos

Former Monte Vista resident Jose George Gallegos, 87, passed away on July 18, 2013, under Lowry Denver Hospice Care surrounded by his loving family. Jose was born on March 9, 1926 in Capulin, Colorado, the son of Alcario Gallegos and Rosenalda Valdez Gallegos. He was united in marriage to Carmen Gallegos on June 14, 1943 in Monte Vista, Colorado. She preceded him in death on March 6, 2011 and they enjoyed 67 years of marriage.

Jose was a wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, who enjoyed fishing, hunting, doing yard work, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Jose worked for and retired from the US Postal Service after years of service. He was a veteran of WWII and he served with the United States Army. He was a member of the VFW Post 3228 in Monte Vista, a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus of Del Norte, and also a member of the Monte Vista Elks Lodge 2456.

Jose is survived by his daughter Marguerite (Robert) Atencio, Colorado Springs, CO; sons Phil (Claudia) Gallegos and Alex Frank Gallegos, of Denver, CO. 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jose was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carmen Gallegos; two sons, Solomon Ernesto and Patrick Herman Gallegos; two sisters, Bertha Trujillo and Lupita Marquez; brothers, Max Lucero, Aguinaldo Gallegos, Sam Gallegos and Bennie Gallegos.

A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 7:00 PM at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monte Vista. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at 10:00 AM also at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monte Vista. Visitation and viewing will be from 1-5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, at Romero Funeral Chapel in Monte Vista. Interment will follow at the Homelake Cemetery in Monte Vista, Colorado with full Military Honors. Arrangements are in care of Romero Funeral Home of Monte Vista.
