Former Ft. Garland resident Jesusita “Susie” Sanchez, 94, passed away May 7, 2013 at her home in Prescott Valley, Arizona, surrounded by her loving family. Susie was born on May 29, 1918 in Lead, South Dakota the daughter of Patricio Estrada and Nativida Martinez Estrada. After her mother’s passing when she was only eight months old Susie was raised by her step-mother Doniaciana Montoya. She was a member of the Chaplets of Davine Mercy. Susie was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother and sister who enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, being outdoors, listening to music, she prayed the rosary daily. Susie especially enjoyed the time she spent with her loving family and friends.
Survivors include her children Robert (Tillie) Sanchez of Grand Junction, CO; Doro (Sylvia) Sanchez of Ft. Garland, CO; Archie (Maddie) Martinez of Omaha, NB; Anna (Frank) Martinez of Denver, CO; Linda (John) Maldonado of Denver, CO; Darlene (Veto) Hernandez of Aurora, CO; Susie Ann Sanchez of Prescott Valley , AZ, twenty grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, twenty great-great-grandchildren, one brother Eppie (Ruth) Jaramillo of Ft. Garland, CO. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Susie was preceded in death by her husband Pete Sanchez, one son Patrick Sanchez, three brothers Refugio, Ernie and Richard Estrada and two sisters Amelia Martinez and Juanita Estrada.
A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Sunday, May 12, 2013 at 7:00 PM at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Ft. Garland. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Monday, May 13, 2013 at 10:00 AM also at the Holy Family Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Ft. Garland Cemetery. Arrangements are in care of Romero Funeral Home of Alamosa.
