ST. GEORGE, Utah — Kathleen Poulson Mortensen, age 86, passed away on January 11th, 2013, at a care center in St. George, Utah, attended by her loving family. She was born in Sanford, Colorado, on December 10, 1926, the first child of Frank Poulson and Velma Christensen Poulson. She had three sisters—Alice, Evelyn, and Morjie, and one brother—Perry.
She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served her entire life in the church, including as Relief Society President more than once. She was married to Albert McIntire Mortensen on September 20, 1946, in Sanford, Colorado, in a double ceremony with Albert’s brother, Clyde Mortensen and Sally Ganus Mortensen, a dear friend. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple three days later on September 23, 1946. They lived in Sanford, Colorado; Farmington, New Mexico; and Aztec, New Mexico, during their lives, but Sanford was always “home”. They were blessed with nine children, and Kathleen cared for them as well as her parents and caring for Albert’s mother. She cared for her daughter, Tammy, who required complete care for 25 years. She cared for Albert with his health problems to the end of his life. Her joy was in service and she was always serving.
Kathleen was an avid gardener and always had a fine garden and beautifully landscaped yard. She always had a bounteous harvest to preserve and provide nutritious meals for her family. She saw to it that the family was taught music, homemaking and other skills, and how to work. They were taught the gospel, by example and precept. Kathleen and Albert served three missions for the Church that they were devoted to—Dulce, New Mexico; Seaview, Washington; and Grand Cayman Island.
Kathleen is survived by a sister, Alice (Bill) Shaw of Walla Walla, Washington; Perry (Norma) Poulson of Aztec, New Mexico; seven children—Lois (Kim) Miller of Sanford, Dixie (Lynn) Hutchins of Ft. Garland, Gordon (Lanae) Mortensen in the Philippines, Peggy (Carl) Haynie of Dallas, Texas, Marsha (John) Aland of St. George, Utah; Rod (Jan) Mortensen of Sanford; and Neal Mortensen of Sunset, Florida; 52 grandchildren and 119 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Mortensen, a sister, Evelyn (Jay) Jackson, Morjie (Phil) Wilson, a daughter Tamara Mortensen, a son Monte Mortensen, three grandchildren—Lee, Jessee, and Cass Miller.
A loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, Kathleen will be dearly missed.
A gathering will be held on Saturday, January 19th, at 10:00 a.m. at the home of Kim and Lois Miller at 1125 Ninth Street in Sanford.
