An apparent homemade, plastic jug based bomb was moved with water and allowed to explode about 5:20 p.m. Saturday near Plachy Hall on the Adams State University campus. An ASU athletic department official reportedly said Saturday night that a student had turned himself in for placing the explosive.
The suspicious object was discovered on one of the parking lot islands just south of Plachy Hall just as the Grizzlies were wrapping up a 43-20 gridiron victory over Western New Mexico at the nearby stadium and as fans were exiting.
Alamosa police, fire, ASU campus security and state patrol cordoned off the area and kept students and others at a safe distance. Water from the AFD platform truck was used to move the bomb from its location away from vehicles in the parking lot. In the process, the bomb, speculated to be a mixture of drain cleaner, water and aluminum foil in a 1/2 to one gallon sized plastic bottle, exploded but caused no damage.
