Outcomes the same, but RG totals revised

Posted: Thursday, Nov 8th, 2012

RIO GRANDE COUNTY — Rio Grande County Clerk Cindy Hill on Wednesday released updated election results.

The outcomes remain the same, but the totals have been revised from the numbers available Tuesday night.

The Del Norte Schools, whose mill levy override passed Tuesday, now show 1,229 favorable votes, increased over the 1075 yes votes announced in unofficial totals Tuesday night. Del Norte’s 3A ballot issue received 896 negative votes (758 votes against the mill levy override were known at press time Tuesday night.) The ballot measure will provide operating funds for the Del Norte schools.

The Del Norte school’s bond issue approved additional revenue in the general funds to restore critical budget cuts, mitigate future cuts, purchase textbooks, computers and other resources, support programs to prepare students for the future, enhance safety and security of students, staff and school property, and maintain competitive salary and benefit levels to retain and attract high quality teachers.

The tax increase will result in an additional property tax mill levy in excess of the levy authorized for the district’s general fund.

Voters on Tuesday selected Independent Pam Bricker as the new Rio Grande County Commissioner in District 3. Her updated total vote calculation on Wednesday was 2,130, nearly 60 votes more than the total available Tuesday night, 1,973 votes. Opponents Gene W. Glover and Marty Asplin also had higher vote tallies on Wednesday, with 1,954 for Glover, about 230 more than Tuesday’s tally of 1,722 and 1,001 for Asplin, nearly 100 more than Tuesday’s 902 count.

The Wednesday numbers are still unofficial.

Running unopposed for the seat in commissioners’ District 3, Republican incumbent Doug Davie drew 4,195 votes in the updated information on Wednesday, a significant boost from the 3,780 confidence votes available on Tuesday night.

Running for the seat in newly created State Senate District 35, Republican Larry Crowder was the winner in Rio Grande County and throughout the new senate district. His revised total from Rio Grande County on Wednesday was 2,913. He had logged 2,585 votes in the county as of press time Tuesday night. His Democratic opponent Crestina Martinez showed more votes in the revised Wednesday numbers as well with 2,268 (her Tuesday total was 2,094), and Libertarian William Stuart Bartley increased his vote count in the county from 167 to 179 in Wednesday’s update.

In the race for State House District 62, won by Democrat incumbent Edward Vigil, Rio Grande County electors cast more votes for challenger Republican Tim Walters whose revised tally on Wednesday was 2,833, a few hundred more votes than the 2,504 total available Tuesday night. Vigil showed an increased number as well on Wednesday, 2,477, nearly 200 more than the 2,290 available Tuesday night.

Rio Grande County voters also selected Republican Peter Comar over the ultimate winner of the 12th Judicial District Attorney race, incumbent Democrat David Mahonee, with totals Tuesday of 2,570 votes for Comar and 2,152 for Mahonee. Those totals rose to 2,894 and 2,337, respectively, on Wednesday.
