VALLEY — In a close race, incumbent 12th Judicial District Attorney David Mahonee, a Democrat, retained his position for another term in Tuesday’s election.

Mahonee’s opponent was his former boss, Republican Peter Comar, who formerly served as district attorney until he was term-limited out four years ago.

“It was a close race, and I want to thank all the people of the San Luis Valley,” Mahonee said. “I will do everything I can to represent them in a fair and just way, make sure justice is served for the community so we have a safe community. I live here too. I want the best for the Valley.”

Mahonee thanked those who voted for him and said he was glad to be able to serve in the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s office for another term.

“I love this Valley, and the people came through, and I am grateful for that.”

Mahonee serves as chief prosecutor for the 12th Judicial District, which encompasses the entire San Luis Valley.

Mahonee was first elected to serve as DA in 2008.

He is a Vietnam veteran and was an attorney in private practice for 17 years. He then served in the DA’s office as deputy DA before being elected to the chief prosecutorial position.
