SAGUACHE — By about a two-to-one margin, Saguache County voters yesterday recalled Saguache County Clerk & Recorder Melinda Myers.
Also by an overwhelming margin, the voters selected Carla Gomez to replace Myers as county clerk.
In the Tuesday tally, which will be canvassed on February 2, 941 voted to recall Myers and 453 voted to retain her. Regarding her replacement, 762 voted for Carla Gomez and 319 for Patricia Jenkins.
“The people sent a clear message,” Gomez said Tuesday night. “All I ask of the people is their patience and understanding during this transition period.”
Gomez will be sworn in on February 7.
“My goal is to listen to the people and serve the people efficiently and respectfully,” Gomez added.
Gomez, a Republican, had run against Myers for the position of county clerk in the close election of November 2010.
Gomez is a San Luis Valley native who has lived in Saguache County since 1972. A business owner, she had served most recently as administrator in victim services in the District Attorney’s office.
She also is a board member and secretary of the Tierra Nueva Farmworker Housing Project in Center, a member of the SLV Health Care Foundation and was recently appointed to the 12th Judicial District Judicial Performance Commission.
