Nonprofit organizations are big contributors to state’s economy

ALAMOSA — Non-profit organizations have a $40 billion impact on the State of Colorado.

According to the recently released Colorado Nonprofit Economic Impact Study, 23,147 nonprofits are responsible for 330,000 jobs and 11.3 percent of the state’s overall economy.  The largest percentage of non-profit missions is Health and Public Safety at 43.8 percent. Arts Education and Science are at 16.5 percent.

There are also 1,600 foundations across Colorado that contribute $1.1 billion in grants annually. The majority of these organizations are run on a small budget with 32.4 percent operating on budgets of $100,000-499,999.

In addition, for every $1 million spent, the non-profit sector creates 10 jobs, compared to seven jobs created for every $1 million spent in the private sector.

Colorado’s non-profits are also divided by county into six regions. They are the Northwest, Denver Metro, Northeast, Southwest, Central and Southeast respectively. The San Luis Valley counties fall in the Southwest Region, which includes the six Valley counties and six additional counties. There are currently 1,062 non-profits in the Southwest Region that account for 5,137 jobs, $545 million in spending, and $812 million in revenue.

Judging by the numbers, there is a trend that is apparent; non-profits are part of the fabric of Colorado’s economy and a vital part of the Valley and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
