Moose place eighth at State Golf Championship

PUEBLO — On Elmwood Golf Course the 3A class of girls’ golf held their State Championship. In Pueblo, Alamosa’s girls qualified as a team while Monte Vista sent Gracie Burkhart and Alyson Baker. The Mean Moose placed eighth in the state shooting a combined 179 over on two passes through the 18-hole course. Burkhart tied for 47th place shooting a total of 58 over par on 36 holes. Baker shot 76 over to take 73rd place.

The girls from Alamosa and Monte Vista faced stiff competition on Monday and Tuesday. Namely the top two placers, Hailey Schalk of Holy Family and Caroline Jordaan of Colorado Academy. Schalk took the individual state title shooting 6 strokes under par on her two passes through the course. Jordaan’s hopes for the individual title were dashed by a rough second day but she still broke even on the 36 holes to lift Colorado Academy to a State Championship.

Lexi Ortega led Alamosa with a score of +53. Ortega wrapped the first 18 holes 27 strokes over. As she familiarized herself with the course Ortega was able lose a stroke in her second pass saving 5 strokes on holes 3, 13 and 18. Fellow Moose Alana Hackett placed 51st with a collective score of +61. Placing third on the team was Rhiley Hacsi. Hacsi shot 34 over par in the first 18 holes and was able to make some corrections going back through shedding three strokes to tie for 56th place in the state. Emma Gilmore also of Alamosa finished 80th in the state with a total score of +87

There was a learning curve for the girls from Monte Vista as well. Burkhart shot a +32 on her first attempt at Elmwood. With a second chance Burkhart slimmed her score by six strokes to earn her spot at number 47 in the state.  Baker took four strokes off her first day to total her +76 two day total.
