Letter to the editor: Long-time Valley resident opposed to Village at Wolf Creek

I still get water out of the Rio Grande River, and of course I very strongly oppose the Village at Wolf Creek. There are three large RV parks between the top of Wolf Creek and South Fork.

I am now 97 years old and have lived in the Valley for 92 years. I skied on Wolf Creek in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s before the war and am quite familiar with the 10-15 feet snowfall for most years on the top of Wolf Creek Pass.

I did turn someone in to the health department in Denver, but never received any kind of response. I, also, owned a very prestigious lot in South Fork as I lived in South Fork for 20 years. I sold this lot because I did not want my grandchildren playing in contaminated water.

I, also, owned several thousand acres of land which received water from the Rio Grande River via the Farmers Union Canal. This land is now owned by my son, Eric Ellithorpe. According to my knowledge, there is no filtering processing of the water before it is delivered to the rancher.

I profess to be a very knowledgeable individual when it comes to water issues. My credentials can be checked with the farmers and ranchers in the Valley who receive water from the Rio Grande River. Hopefully, these farmers and ranchers will assist us with money or other data in attending to the proposition against any further development on top of Wolf Creek.

There are many people enjoying the ski area, but what occurs with their disposal system? The quality of any fluids they dispose of are dumping into the head waters of the Rio Grande River.

I have many valid reasons that this should not become a housing development on top of Wolf Creek. There is no provision of disposal of all bad things, such as medical and human fluids which contaminate the water. An absolute efficient system to dispose of said effluents which would absolutely be impossible on the top of Wolf Creek.

Why would anybody ever allow and permit a road into a village that has not even been approved yet!

Should it be necessary to go before the proper people in the BLM, I remain at your disposal. I am willing to testify at the proper hearing regarding any decision that might be made by the Forest Service to go forward with this extremely faulty proposition if my tender age will allow.

I now reside at the Bridge in Alamosa, Room 5 on the main floor should you need further comments.

Bill Ellithorpe

P.S. What about the small appropriate diversion that comes over the top of Wolf Creek? How do you propose, or should the State Water Conservation System be concerned?
