Fatal shooting victim named

ALAMOSA — Pending more information from the coroner, Alamosa County Sheriff Robert Jackson on Friday tentatively identified an August 9th shooting death victim as Mathias “Matt” Fritz, 39, of Alamosa.

Another victim of the August 9th shooting, a female whose name has not yet been released, was flown out on Thursday and is being treated in a hospital out of the area.

Sheriff Jackson said sheriff’s office staff and Colorado Bureau of Investigation agents are still investigating the incident, which occurred in the early morning hours of August 9 in an apartment above the Extreme Graphics office near Vendola Plumbing & Heating in East Alamosa.

“We are interviewing witnesses,” Sheriff Jackson said. He added that no specific suspects have been identified in the shooting, and although one of the persons interviewed during the investigation was arrested, it was not in connection with the case but was because the person had outstanding warrants.

“We have not arrested any suspects,” Sheriff Jackson said Friday night, “and investigation is ongoing.”

Neighbors reported the shooting early Thursday after finding the female victim wandering around with gunshot wounds to her head or face, according to Sheriff Jackson who was notified about 7 a.m. on Thursday.

Authorities found Fritz deceased at the scene, the apparent victim of a homicide.

Fritz’s death is the second homicide in Alamosa County in less than two weeks. Elias “Lee” Narciso Gallegos, 74, is now in custody in the Alamosa County detention center on pending charges of murder in the first degree, harassment and domestic violence following the stabbing death of his wife Lorraine Gallegos, 71, on Friday, July 27. Sheriff Jackson confirmed that Lee Gallegos, who was initially hospitalized after allegedly trying to take his own life, was transferred to the county jail about a week ago.
