Centauri baseball swept by Pagosa Springs

LA JARA – The Centauri High School baseball team was looking for its first Intermountain League win on Saturday as it hosted a doubleheader against Pagosa Springs at the CHS field.

Unfortunately, the woes continued for the Falcons as they were swept by the Pirates. Pagosa won the games by scores of 15-4 and 14-2.

Game 1

The Pirates got off to a fast start as they scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Riley Laugel led off with a walk and he stole second. He came home on Chris Martinez’s single for a 1-0 lead.

Hunter Pouyer continued the inning by getting hit by a pitch and Kyler Henderson’s single plated Martinez. An error put Hunter Pouyer on third and he came home on Cooper Ralston’s sacrifice fly. Jaden Tuggle reached on an error to drive home Henderson.

Pagosa put two more runs on the board in the second. Martinez drew a walk and Hunter Pouyer was again hit by a pitch. Henderson walked to load the bases, and Ralston singled home both runners for a 6-0 advantage.

The Pirates added four more runs in the third. Tuggle hit a leadoff triple and scored on a wild pitch.

Brodie Norton doubled with two outs and Laugel walked. Martinez was safe on an error in the outfield and Norton and Laugel both scored. Hunter Pouyer reached on an error and Martinez scored for a 10-0 lead.

The Falcons got on the board by scoring one run in the bottom of the third. Caden Allen tripled with two men out and scored a wild pitch.

Centauri drew closer with three runs in the fourth. Deven Brady led off with a triple, and Kamryn Garcia walked. Pablo Hernandez’s single brought Brady home, and Garcia scored on an error.

Hernandez was taken off the basepaths on Parker Buhr’s ground ball, but Buhr was safe on the fielder’s choice. Spencer Smith’s triple plated Buhr to cut the deficit to 10-4.

The Pirates put the game out of reach by scoring five times in the fifth. Laugel had a leadoff single and he came around to score on Martinez’s triple. Hunter Pouyer reached on a fielder’s choice and Ralston’s single brought Martinez and Hunter Pouyer home.

Zach Pouyer singled and an error allowed Ralston to score. Dylan Dempster singled to plate Zach Pouyer for a 15-4 lead.

Centauri went down in order in the bottom of the fifth and the game ended on the 10-run rule.

Dylan Gallegos started on the mound for the Falcons and he took the loss. He allowed 13 runs and 10 hits and he struck out five, walked four and he hit two batters. Brady relieved Dylan 

Gallegos and he gave up two runs and three hits with no strikeouts, one walk and one hit batter.

The Falcons collected only five hits. They were led by Hernandez who went 1-2 with one RBI, Smith who went 1-2 with a triple and one RBIs, Leland Chacon who went 1-2, Allan who went 1-2 with a triple, and Brady who went 1-3 with a triple.

Game 2

The Pirates again got off to a hot start with three runs in the first. Laugel led off with an infield single and took second on a wild pitch. Hunter Pouyer singled home Laugel for a 1-0 lead.

Henderson was safe on an error, and Ralston singled to plate Hunter Pouyer. Tuggle walked to load the bases, and Henderson came home on Zach Pouyer’s sacrifice fly.

Pagosa scored two more runs in the second. Ty Richey singled to lead off the inning and Laugel hit a two-run homer for a 5-0 advantage.

The Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the first by scoring one run. Dylan Gallardo led off by getting hit by a pitch and he stole second. Smith doubled home Dylan Gallegos to cut the deficit to 5-1.

The Pirates scored four times in the fourth. Dempster led off with a double and Richey walked. Laugel singled home Dempster, and Martinez reached on an error to load the bases. Henderson walked to plate Richey, Ralston’s sacrifice fly brought Laugel home, and Tuggle doubled home Martinez for a 9-1 advantage.

Pagosa scored another run in the fifth. Zach Pouyer drew a leadoff walk, stole second and took third on an error. He came home on Dempster’s sacrifice fly.

The Falcons scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth. Buhr was hit by a pitch and took second on a wild pitch. Jace Haslett’s double brought Buhr home to bring Centauri within 10-2.

The Pirates put the game on ice with four runs in the sixth, Hunter Pouyer hit a ground-rule double to lead off the inning, and Henderson was hit by a pitch. Ralston walked to load the bases, and Hunter Pouyer came home on a wild pitch.

Tuggle doubled home Henderson, and Zach Pouyer’s single plated Ralston and Tuggle.

Centauri went three up and three down in the bottom of the sixth and the game ended on the 10-run rule.

Hernandez was Centauri’s starting pitcher and he was dealt the loss. He surrendered 10 runs and eight hits and he struck out one and walked four. Drake Gallardo relieved Hernandez in the fifth and he allowed four runs and four hits. He no strikeouts, one walk and he hit two batters.

The Falcons had four hits and were led by Buhr who went 1-2, Garcia who went 1-2, Haslett who went 1-3 with a double and one RBI, and Smith who went 1-3 with a double and one RBI.

What’s next

Centauri (5-11, 0-4) will host a single game against Sanford on Tuesday. The first pitch is at 4 p.m. The Falcons will then travel to Alamosa for another league doubleheader on Saturday. The first game begins at 11 a.m.
