High school sports just around the corner

SAN LUIS VALLEY — The temperature may be 90 degrees outside, a sure sign of the ongoing summer, but the first official day that high school teams can practice is just a little over a week away.

For members of the Monte Vista and Alamosa boys’ golf teams, it’s even sooner. The golf teams get their first official practice for the season ahead this Monday, Aug. 4.

The rest of the teams in the Valley’s 14 high schools, including the sports of football, volleyball, cross country, gymnastics and boys’ soccer begin practice on Monday, Aug. 11.

All Colorado High School Activities Association paperwork and physicals must be turned in to each school’s Athletic Director before a student-athlete can engage in the practices.

Valley Courier Sports will run school sports announcements as often as is possible, subject to space availability, and will run overall school sports announcements each Friday until the regular sports season gets underway.

The first day that a fall sports contest can take place, with the exception of boys’ golf, is Thursday, Aug. 28, with 9 days of practice required by the CHSAA before that date.

Dunes Volleyball charity yard sale Aug. 9-10



ALAMOSA — The Dunes Volleyball Club is holding a charity yard sale on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9-10, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, at the Alamosa Boys & Girls Club. The proceeds will go to local charities on behalf of Dunes Volleyball Club “Gold” sponsors First Ford of Monte Vista and Community Banks. Anyone wishing to donate items for the yard sale can contact coach Amber Ullery at 580-3085, or bring the items to the Alamosa Boys & Girls Club on Saturday morning, Aug. 9.



SLV Volleyball Rules Clinic Saturday

Monte Vista golf team reports Monday



MONTE VISTA — The Monte Vista High School boys’ golf team begins official practice on Monday, Aug. 4. All paperwork and physicals must be turned in to Athletic Director Scott Wiedeman before participation can begin. Contact coach Traci Barbosa at 852-3586.



Alamosa Football Camps Aug. 4-7



ALAMOSA — The Alamosa High School football program will hold two camps Monday through Thursday, Aug. 4-7, at the AHS practice field. Players in 4th through 8th grades will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. each day, and the cost of the camp is $20. All players interested in participating in Alamosa High School football this fall will meet from 4 to 5:30 p.m. each day. The high school camp is free. Alamosa Jr. High Volleyball Camp Aug. 4-6



ALAMOSA — The Alamosa High School volleyball program will hold a Junior High Volleyball Skills Camp Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 4-6, at the high school gym. All Valley Youth Football Camp Aug. 4-6



DEL NORTE — The 2nd Annual All Valley Youth Football Camp hosted in Del Norte for youth in 3rd through 8th grades will be held Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 4-6, at the Del Norte Soccer Field. Centauri Football Camp Aug. 4-7



LA JARA — The Centauri High School football program will hold a camp for players in 6th through 12th grades Monday through Thursday, Aug. 4-7, from 6 to 8 p.m. each day at the Centauri football field. Alamosa Youth Gymnastics Camp Aug. 4-7



ALAMOSA — The Alamosa High School gymnastics program will hold its annual Youth Gymnastics Camp Fundraiser Monday through Thursday, Aug. 4-7, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. each day in the AHS auxiliary gym. The camp is for ages 4 to 14 and costs $25, with instruction on bars, vault, beam, floor, tumble and dance. Register on the first day of camp. Monte Vista Football Camp Aug. 4-8



MONTE VISTA — The Monte Vista High School football program will hold a camp Monday through Friday, Aug. 4-8, for all high school student-athletes interested in participating in football this fall. Sargent Volleyball Camp Aug. 4-7



SARGENT — The Sargent Farmers Individual Skills Volleyball Camp will be held Monday through Thursday, Aug. 4-7, for third grade through high school players. The camp fee is $35 and includes a camp T-shirt. Checks should be made out to “Sargent Volleyball” and turned in along with a permission slip on the first day of camp. The sessions will run according to the following schedule: 8 to 10 a.m.—3rd & 4th graders; 10 a.m. to noon—5th & 6th graders; 1 to 3 p.m.—7th & 8th graders; 3 to 5 p.m.—High School. Centauri Fall Sports parents’ meeting Aug. 7



LA JARA — Centauri High School will hold a Fall Sports Parents’ Meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Centauri High School gym. All parents of Centauri High School student-athletes are asked to attend the meeting in preparation for the 2008 fall sports season. Centauri sponsors fall season teams in football, volleyball, and boys & girls cross country. Centauri also had had several student-athletes over the years participate in soccer and golf for Alamosa High School.



Monte Vista opens fall practices Aug. 11



MONTE VISTA — Official practices for the Monte Vista High School fall sports of football, volleyball and cross country begin on Monday, Aug. 11. All paperwork and physicals must be turned in to Athletic Director Scott Wiedeman before participation can begin. Contact Wiedeman at 588-1398 with any questions. Jim McAuliffe is coaching football, Amber Ullery is coaching volleyball, and Becky Tonso is coaching cross country. Monte Vista also has had several student-athletes over the years participate in boys’ soccer for Alamosa High School.



Monte Vista volleyball practices start Aug. 11



MONTE VISTA — The Monte Vista High School volleyball team will begin practices for the fall season on Monday, Aug. 11. Mandatory practices will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and also from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Del Norte Youth Volleyball Camp Aug. 14-16
