Erlinda Maria Garcia, 67



CENTER — Center, Colo. resident Erlinda Maria Garcia, 67, lost her battle against liver cancer on Feb. 28, 2007 at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colo. Erlinda was born Sept. 14, 1939 in Tierra Amarilla, N.M. the daughter of Abran Velardez and Emma Rascon Lucero. She was united in marriage to Adonais ‘Don’ Ereminio Garcia on Oct. 22, 1956 at St. Francis Jerome Church in Center. Erlinda enjoyed knitting, quilting, cooking, baking, childcare, collecting dolls and spending time with her loving children.

Survivors include her husband Adonais Garcia of the family home in Center; three daughters Patricia (Kim) Mikules of Colorado Springs, Colo., Dorothy (James) Vigil and Ilene Garcia (Marcelino Casias) both of Denver, Colo.; five sons Richard (Michelle) Garcia of Center, Thomas (Theresa) Garcia of Hooper, Colo., Dan (Mary) Garcia of Center, Billy (Rebekah) Garcia of Alamosa, Colo., and Michael (Amanda) Garcia of Center; 20 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; three sisters Olivia Lucero, Gloria Valdez and Becky Lucero all of Pueblo, Colo.; seven brothers, Louis Vigil of Monte Vista, Colo., Lorenzo Ulibarri of Center, Joe Salazar of Colorado Springs, Alex Lucero of Denver, Andrew (Dolores) Lucero of Denver, Jesse (Gloria) Lucero of Pueblo, and Antonio (Annette) Lucero of Denver. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Erlinda was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Lenora Garcia and one sister Theresa Sandoval.

A vigil service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Mon., March 5, 2007 at 7 p.m. at St. Francis Jerome Church in Center. Funeral services will be held on Tues., March 6, at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Jerome Church. Interment will follow at La Garita Cemetery in La Garita, Colo. Viewing will be held on Monday from 5 p.m. to service time at St. Francis Jerome Church. Arrangements are in care of Romero Funeral Home of Monte Vista.



John Albert Dabney, 89



CENTER — John Albert Dabney, 89, of Center, Colo. passed away Thurs., Mar. 1, 2007 at his home. John was born on April 1, 1917, in Creede, Colo. to John and Ada Ruth (Hurt) Dabney.

John spent much of his young life at Santa Maria and at the ranch he built with his father, known as the Continental Ranch, west of Creede. He purchased his first cow in 1932 and continued to expand his cattle herd and ranches throughout his many years of hard work. He graduated from Creede High School in 1935. John married Marjorie Van Buskirk, his wife and life long companion on Dec. 16, 1936. He was well known in the ranching community and always loved talking to people about the history of Creede. He was a previous member of the Colorado Cattleman’s Association and the Creede Elks Lodge. He published his own book titled “A Life in the West”. John enjoyed hunting, fishing at his ranches in Saguache and Creede, and spending time with his loving family and friends.

John is survived by his sister, Geraldine Howard; his two daughters, Sandi Cunningham and Grace Calhoun, both of Saguache; his four grandchildren, Shawn (Terryl) Jensen, of Monte Vista, Colo. Brian (Kay) Wood, of Grand Junction, Colo. Rhonda (Keith) Mullenix, of Monte Vista and Jill (James) Johnston, of Grand Junction; along with eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. His parents, John and Ada; and his loving wife, Marjorie precede him in death.

Funeral services to honor and celebrate his life will be held Tue., March 6, at 11 a.m. at the Creede Community Church with interment to follow at the Creede Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Creede Mining Museum, in care of Strohmayer’s Funeral Home.

Arrangements were made under the direction of Strohmayer’s Funeral Home in Monte Vista.
