MV wrestlers take 33 wins at Falcon Duals

LA JARA — Forfeiting at three weight classes, the Monte Vista Pirates came through with 33 wins against 21 losses for the day in the Centauri Duals Tournament.

Two Pirates went a perfect 5-0 — No. 4 ranked Zach Trujillo at 119 lbs. and No. 2 ranked Justin Prieto at 135.

Trujillo pinned Carlos Valverde of Dolores Huerta, took a 15-0 technical fall over Cole Mastin of Pagosa, pinned Grant Suto of Rocky Ford, pinned Calyn Miller of Gunnison, and took a win by injury default from Olathe’s No. 1 ranked Bryson Gray, who suffered a painful extended elbow injury early in the match and wasn’t able to continue.

Prieto pinned Larry Maez of Dolores Huerta, pinned Ryan Hamilton of Pagosa, pinned Dan Axtell of Olathe, took a 10-6 decision oveer No. 3 ranked Travis Schwindt of Rocky Ford, and won by injury default over Gunnison’s 6th ranked Levi Tredway.

Two other Pirates had four wins against just one loss. No. 5 ranked Pablo Mascarenas at 112 started by losing a tough 18-12 decision to No. 2 ranked Domingo Abraham of Dolores Huerta, then came right back to pin 6th ranked Steven Smith of Pagosa, and take a 15-0 technical fall over Tyler Lundquist of Rocky Ford.

Adam Garcia had a solid tournament at 130. He began by pinning Victor Guerrero of Dolores Huerta, then pinned Dillon Sandoval of Pagosa and Jason Pridy of Olathe before losing an 8-7 cliff-hanger to Steven Herrera of Rocky Ford.

It also was a solid outing for senior heavyweight David Warren. He began by pinning Chad Gatliff of Dolores Huerta, then pinned No. 9 ranked Tyler Hawk of Olathe. Warren finally was stopped on a pin by No. 3 ranked Brock Freidenberger of Rocky Ford before coming right back to defeat John Kuykendall of Gunnison, 5-1.

Also picking up three wins was Jose Villagomez at 125. He lost on a pin to Aragon of Dolores Huerta, then won on a pin over Pringle of Pagosa, Villegomez again was pinned, this time by 8th ranked Jaime Goza of Olathe, and once more came back, finishing the tourney strong with a pin of Gunnison’s 9th ranked Jacob Cadwell.

Four Pirates went 2-3 on the day. Joey Doyle at 103 scored on a pin over Clarke of Pagosa, while his three losses came on pins against ranked wrestlers — Garrison Ortiz of Dolores Huerta, No. 3 ranked Jose Medina of Olathe, and No. 2 ranked David Garcia of Rocky Ford.

Ethan Hasty at 160 pinned Ford of Pagosa, then ran smack into No. 2 ranked Chris Diaz of Olathe and lost on a pin. Right after that, Hasty had to face No. 2 ranked Chris Schweizer of Rocky Ford, and again lost on a pin, and to top it off, he then had to take on No. 4 ranked Justin Gross of Gunnison, again losing on a pin in the brutally tough weight class.

Aaron Heredia’s big win at 140 came on a pin over Luerco of Pagosa, while Chris Salazar at 215 went right out and won his first match by pinning Benevidez of Dolores Huerta, After getting pinned by Hurd of Pagosa, Salazar came back to pin Seb Wollert of Olathe, before losing on pins to No. 9 Omar Perez of Rocky Ford and No. 5 Scott Redden of Gunnison.

Monte Vista’s 9th ranked German Gutierrez at 171 found himself in one of the tournament’s toughest weight classes. He was pinned by No. 4 Alonzo Rodriguez of Dolores Huerta before coming back to pin Burgrafer of Pagosa. Gutierrez then had three brutal opponents in a row, losing 11-5 to Olathe’s Marvin Rivera, then getting pinned by No. 3 Jacob Jurney of Rocky Ford and No. 3 Eric Lee of Gunnison.

In other premier match-ups between highly ranked wrestlers, No. 3 Travis Schwindt of Rocky Ford defeated No. 3 Levi Tredway of Gunnison 5-1; No. 2 Chris Schweizer of Rocky Ford defeated No. 4 Justin Grosse of Gunnison 6-3; No. 3 Jacob Jurney of Rocky Ford defeated No. 3 Eric Lee of Gunnison 5-3; No. 6 Steven Smith of Pagosa nipped No. 2 Domingo Abraham of Dolores Huerta 3-2; No. 2 Chris Schweizer of Rocky Ford defeated No. 2 Chris Diaz of Olathe 5-3; and No. 2 Chris Diaz of Olathe defeated No. 4 Justin Grosse of Gunnison 8-2.
