Life is too short

Life is too short, or at least that's what people keep telling me.
The past couple of months that little phrase has been a recurring theme in my life. I don't remember a time when so many different people have told me life is short, go and do it or life is too short, live it.
This phrase ...more
Still Waters: Happy anniversary

Kevin Wilkins entered our lives more than three decades ago. He worked with my mother at the newspaper in Craig, in the northwestern part of the state. My older sister Beth, Kevin and I graduated from Moffat County High School in different years. The three of us also attended Union College, a Christian school in Lincoln, Neb.
We were fortunate ...more

This column is calling all those who care about wild horses, wild burros and wild animals per se to stand up and share your view with the Department of Interior's "Wild Horse & Burro Strategy Development Document." It is partly a template from "Saving America's Mustangs"!
The readers may or may not know that recent round-ups have killed young ...more

I read somewhere that the US has the highest number of consumers per capita in the world.
When you stop to consider that the people companies target are in the middle and upper classes, you have to wonder what would happen if U.S. companies targeted a new market, the lower income people who can't afford to be consumers of high ...more
Rabbitbrush Rambler: Remembering railroaders
Posted: Monday, Jul 26th, 2010
It was my good luck to attend a barbecue this summer and get acquainted with some veteran railroaders, along with their families who kept the home fires burning when the men were on the job, sometimes for more days at a stretch than wives like to recall. The people I met are worth remembering as part of the Valley's history. ...more
Native Writes: Gossip

I don't know about you, but one of my favorite games as an adolescent was "gossip."
We all sat in a circle and started a phrase around the group by whispering in the ear of the next kid in line until the person on the other side of the originator said out loud what he or she had heard. It ...more

For the last couple of years many of the Valley Courier readers have been gracious enough to read and comment on my weekly column. This has become important to me for numerous reasons, but none more than the fact that you have watched and helped me grow.
I began my column as an inexperienced college freshman. I needed to gain ...more
Swing through

Most people think of square dancing as someone saying "do si do" and "swing your partner" while Country Western music plays in the background and ladies in full skirts swoop around a dance floor. (OK, the last part is true. They have fabulous skirts!)
Try the "ocean wave" or "Ferris wheel." How about dancing to "New York, New York" or ...more

Carl's Jr. has finally done it. They've created a Foot-long Cheeseburger. Available for $6.50 as a value meal or $4 for the plain cheeseburger, this new creation allows Americans to get even more greasy bang for their strained buck.
Disappointingly enough, the creators were not able to also create a foot-long hamburger patty. Rather, the hoagie is loaded with three ...more

Psychologists have written mountains of papers on the importance of communicating with your children, especially when they are teenagers and young adults.
I say talking with them is great, but there are some things parents never want to hear:
"I'm in jail-can you bail me out?"
"I'm pregnant. But don't worry, it will work out great. I'll live with you ...more
Rabbitbrush Rambler: Will the Valley become a sacrifice zone?

As soon as the importance of clean energy and conservation of natural resources caught on in our nation, plans for developing sustainable energy exploded. Unfortunately, in the guise of green, greed soon took over.
In plans for sustainable energy development, the San Luis Valley is promoted because it has lots of sun, low population, and few voters to tell legislators ...more
