Donald Dean Bushnell, 79

DURANGO — Donald Dean Bushnell, 79, died at his home in Durango, Colo. Sept. 12, 2009 after a short illness. The retired Fort Lewis College math professor had been diagnosed with acute Myeloid Leukemia in June of this year. He was born in Alma, Neb. on Aug. 29, 1930 to Robert and Delpha Bushnell and was raised on farms in south central Nebraska. He graduated from Holdrege High School in 1947.

Donald graduated from the Teacher’s College at Kearney State University in 1950 and then he enlisted in the USAF serving as a 1st Lt. in the armament systems operation during the Korean War.

Dr. Bushnell began his teaching career in Sanford. Colo. in 1953. He had a 53-year career in education teaching high school in Sanford and Bayfield, Colo. and then becoming a principal in Los Alamos, N.M.

He married Elizabeth Jean Barr on Dec. 23, 1955. He was educated at Penn State University, Clark University, Worcester, Mass., Texas A & M, Auburn New Mexico Highlands and Colorado State University. He received his masters and doctorate from the University of Northern Colo. He taught at Fort Lewis College for 26 years and was chairman of the curriculum committee. He received the Alice Admire Outstanding Teacher Award in 1984 and upon retirement was honored with the establishment of the Donald Bushnell Scholarship fund.

He also taught at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and on the Navajo Reservation at Dine College, Tsalie, Ariz. He was a leader in the Boy Scouts of America and served two terms on the District R-9 school board, once as board president. He was also a longtime leader in the LDS church.

He is survived by his wife of 54-years, Elizabeth of Durango; children Scott (Joy) Bushnell of SLC, Utah; daughter Jennifer (Lino) Innocenzi of Chino Hills, Calif; son Matt (Erin) of Durango; daughter Kristen (Joe) Phillips of New York; brother Robert Bushnell of Ormond Beach, Fla. as well as by 12 grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.

Visitation was Thur., Sept. 17, 2009 at Hood Mortuary. Funeral services are Fri., Sept. 18, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2 Hilltop Circle, Durango. Graveside services will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday in Sanford.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Donald Bushnell Scholarship, Fort Lewis College Foundation, 1000 Rim Drive, Durango, CO 81301.
