LaRue Haynie Elliott, 88
PROVO, Utah — LaRue Haynie Elliott, 88, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully Sun., June 28, 2009, at Cove Point Retirement Community in Provo, Utah LaRue was born on Aug. 29, 1920 to Leonard M. and Hazel G. (Mortensen) Haynie in Manassa, Colo.
She is survived by Theodore F. Elliott, her husband for 63 years; daughter Nancy (Alden) Tueller of Provo; son Bob (Dorice Williams) Elliott of Lawrence, Kan; grandchildren Michael (Korina Lombardo) Tueller, Scot (Martha Riano) Tueller , Lance (Valerie Nisson) Tueller of Idaho Springs, Brooke Elliott (Kary ) Faria da Cunha , Jane Elliott of New York City and Colin Elliott; great-grandchildren Peter, Jessica, Margaret, Laura and Ryder Tueller; sister,Louise Johnson, of Provo and abrother, Delph Haynie of Durango, Colo.
She was preceded in death by a brother Elwood Haynie of Colorado Springs, sister Louise Johnson of Provo and brother Delph Haynie of Durango.
LaRue moved with her parents to Alamosa, Colo. when she was twelve years of age. She graduated from Alamosa High School, attended the University of Utah for two years, and studied at the Dr. W. H. Groves Latter-day Saint Hospital in Salt Lake City for three years where she received her R.N. degree. She joined the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War II in December 1943, serving in Oregon, California, and Virginia. She was then assigned to the 81st Field Hospital serving in England, France, and Germany. The hospital was made up of 18 nurses, 22 officers, and 186 enlisted men. Their patients were displaced persons released from German concentration camps and prisoner of war camps, and were of many nationalities. LaRue received an honorable discharge from the service in December 1945. She met her husband Theodore F. Elliott while in the service. He was an officer in the 81st field hospital. They were later sealed together and to their children, Nancy and Robert, as an eternal family on Aug. 2, 1977 in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
LaRue and Ted lived in Sidney, N.Y., where Ted grew up. Ted practiced optometry in Sidney for 60-years. LaRue served in the community for many years working in all the schools as an aide and as a school nurse teacher. She was a woman of compassion and service, full of kindness and love. In 1972, LaRue went back to college and received her bachelor of science degree from New York State University at Oneonta, N.Y. LaRue provided selfless service to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having worked in the Primary, the Young Women’s Organization and the Relief Society. Funeral services will be held Thur., July 2, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Sharon East Stake Center, l2400 North 1060 East, Provo. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church. She will be buried with full military rites in Sidney, N.Y. July 21, 2009. Condolences may be sent to info@bergmortuary.com.
